Freedom of Information

The Freedom of Information Acts 1997 and 2003, effective from 21 April 1998, establishes new statutory rights:

  • a right for each person to access information held by public bodies;
  • a right for each person to have official information relating to him/herself amended where it is incomplete, incorrect or misleading;
  • a right to obtain reasons for decisions affecting him/herself.

As prescribed by Statutory Instrument, and with effect from 31 May 2006, the Institute of Public Administration becomes a public body for the purposes of paragraph 1(5) of the First Schedule to the Freedom of Information Act, 1997. This means that anyone can apply to the Institute seeking access to records held by the Institute from 31 May onwards.

To help people exercise their rights, the Institute has prepared a guide, entitled Institute of Public Administration FOI Sections 15 and 16 Reference Book - A Guide to the functions, records, rules and practices of the Institute of Public Administration, June 2006. An application form to assist in making a valid request is also available.

If you have any questions on the Freedom of Information Act and how it applies to your delaings with the Institute, please contact email: Dympna Lynch, Tel: (01) 240 3600.
