This part-time programme—the first course of its kind in Ireland—examines the economics of healthcare provision. There is a palpable need among those interested in healthcare in Ireland to understand the economic rationale behind the allocation of resources in this vital sector. To meet this need, the Diploma explores the fundamentals of economics, the distinctive features of healthcare economics and the different ways of evaluating spending on healthcare.
The Diploma will appeal to all those interested in healthcare provision in Ireland. Whether they work in central or local government, as medical administrators or as healthcare professionals, students will gain a sold understanding of the economic issues surrounding healthcare.
This programme takes one academic year. It begins in late September and ends with examinations in mid April. It is delivered through a blend of distance education and four weekend seminars at the IPA in Dublin. It is expressly designed for those who want to obtain a nationally accredited qualification while remaining in full-time employment.
The Diploma consists of three modules:
• The Fundamentals of Applied Economics
• Health Economics
• An Introduction to Healthcare Evaluation Techniques
The Diploma in Health Economics is accredited by the National University of Ireland (NUI).
This programme is assessed through assignments (one assignment for each module) and final examinations.
