The Professional Certificate in Governance is a one-year part-time programme - delivered online - that addresses a key area of concern to professionals in the public and private sectors. Governance is a subject used in several contexts and is a subject of much debate in Ireland and elsewhere. This programme examines governance as a set of structures and processes used in arriving at and implementing decisions. 

Addressing such topics as the role and responsibilities of governing bodies and boards, the performance and accountability of directors, assurance arrangements, fiduciary responsibilities, executive and non-executive functions and reserved functions of boards, the Certificate explains the principles of governance and the constituent elements of ‘good’ governance. In short, graduates will have authoritative knowledge of the principles and practice associated with decision-making and control in organisations. 

The lecturing team includes experienced governance specialists and practitioners. Study groups and peer interaction are facilitated and encouraged.

Delivery Method

This year’s programme is delivered online, so students do not need to travel to the IPA campus in order to study toward a postgraduate qualification. They will be connected with the course components, IPA staff, and fellow learners no matter where they live.

Via the IPA’s online learning portal, students will access comprehensive course material, video lectures, and live webinars where lecturers will engage with student questions and enable discussion. Students will also receive a hardcopy textbook and access to the resources of the IPA Library. They will be able to virtually meet their fellow classmates on forums and exchange experiences and views.

Accessing and using the online content will be a straightforward affair; students will not require anything beyond standard ICT skills. The IPA will provide comprehensive guidance and support.

Fees

The cost of the programme is €2,500 per annum (includes all matriculation and examination fees, all seminars, textbooks and course material), payable in two instalments.

Note: Fees may increase slightly from year to year. Where this occurs, continuing students will be charged the increased fee.

Students are assessed on the basis of an assignment, a project and an examination.
