Strategy Development and Review for State Bodies and Public Sector Organisations is a two hour specialist-led online course which will provide participants with an understanding of strategy in a Public Sector context and what a 'good' strategy looks like.  The course will address key developments, happening at national level, in respect of performance reporting and their implications for state and public bodies. Strategy Development and Review for State Bodies and Public Sector Organisations is a two-hour course which includes a 10 minute break. It will be remotely delivered through Ms Teams and facilitated by subject matter experts.

Where possible and in the strictest respect of current public health guidelines, a small number of participants may be offered to participate in situ at the IPA Training and Education Centre in Ballsbridge, Dublin.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this training, participants will:

  • have an understanding of strategy in a public sector context
  • have an improved understanding of what ‘good’ strategy looks like
  • have an appreciation of how to best ensure that strategy is sufficiently forward looking and yet allows progress to be measured along the way
  • be aware of key developments happening at national level in respect of performance reporting and their implications for state and public bodies
  • consider how a governing body/Board can ensure that it affords appropriate time and attention to strategy and strategic issues as part of its business
Course Content

The Strategy Development and Review course will cover the following areas:

  • Key roles and responsibilities of Boards and Senior Teams in shaping and influencing strategies including identification of tangible deliverables
  • A typical strategy development process or cycle
  • Development of business/corporate plans and alignment with organisational strategic framework
  • Effective reporting on strategy implementation
  • How to embed performance management, reporting and accountability for strategy delivery in an organisation and ensure strategic performance culture.
Course Leader
