Assistant Principal Officers (APs) are an important link between senior management and those tasked with delivering organisational goals on the ground. The challenge for those new to the Assistant Principal level is to find a balance between using existing experience and expertise while continuously identifying alternative approaches, behaviours and skills to work with and through others to deliver on goals and responsibilities.

This programme is designed to assist those newly promoted to the Assistant Principal (AP) role to align their skill sets and approaches with the needs and expectations of this senior leadership role.  The programme will support staff to achieve their people leadership, oversight and functional responsibilities by developing an appropriate leadership mindset and broaden relevant skillsets to work between with and through others to achieve results.

The programme consists of three x one day modules with the time between modules to allow for individual reflection and application of learning to organisational issues.  We also offer the possibility to undertake a diagnostic tool as a means to provide individual feedback and accelerate learning.  The programme is firmly grounded in the current realities of the public sector.  Various approaches are used to assist discussion, debate and application of points to participants’ working situations.  Participants should identify development goals as a focus for their learning and be willing to bring and share work challenges as a basis for discussion to learn.  Please see the downloadable pdf brochure below for further information.

The Assistant Principal Officer programme consists of three x one day modules and is designed to support those new to the Assistant Principal (AP) role in their people leadership, oversight and functional responsibilities.

Module Dates are:

  • Module 1: 28 April 2020
  • Module 2: 12 May 2020
  • Module 3: 28 May 2020

To obtain the most benefit from this programme it is recommended that all three Modules are completed in sequence.

Participants of this programme will typically be newly appointed to the Assistant Principal (AP) role or have been working in the role for less than 5 years.

Fee: The cost of this three-day programme is €1,450 per person for Corporate Member of the IPA and €1,540 for others.  Fee includes course material, lunch and refreshments each day.  To obtain the most benefit from this course, it is recommended that all three modules are completed in sequence. Cost also includes a diagnostic tool, completed after Module 1 to provide individual feedback at Module 2.

Cancellation Policy: Please note, that in the event of a cancellation less than 48 working hours before the commencement of a course, a 15% cancellation fee will be charged.  Cancellation fee will also apply to non-arrivals on the day.

Enhancing your Mindset for Strategic and People Leadership

Find a balance between thinking strategically, working collaboratively with others and delivering on a broad range of priorities.  There is an opportunity to review the policy formation process and the requisite governance and leadership expectations of senior managers in a changing environment.

Strengthening and Broadening the Skillset Portfolio

To work with multiple stakeholders and provide oversight in decision making and people management to optimise talent and deliver better outcomes.

Toolset to Build Capacity

In order to develop and scale up organisational capacity to deliver at individual and collective level, with better focus on sustainable approaches to engagement, performance and accountability.

Course Content

The programme consists of three x one day modules and will focus on enhancing and developing leadership, governance and management competencies expected of APs. The time between modules is to allow for individual reflection and application of learning to organisational issues.  Participants of this programme will typically be newly appointed to the AP role or have been working in the role for less than 5 years.

The programme is firmly grounded in the current realities of the public and state sector. To link learning to the realities of the participant’s work environment, the programme will include interactive discussions, leadership and management diagnostic frameworks and a range of specialist contributors.

Other Information

The course can be tailored for in-house delivery. The course can be tailored to the specific requirements of a Government Department or State Agency and delivered on an in-house basis at a negotiated rate. We will also deliver the programme where two or three Departments come together to provide a minimum number of participants.
