As for previous elections, the Institute of Public Administration, in conjunction with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage is offering training for Local Authority staff involved in the Local and European Elections.  Workshops will be delivered in a number of locations across Ireland in February, March and April 2024.  

The Local and European Election Workshops and Re-count Workshops are designed for Returning Officers, Deputy Returning Officers, Count Supervisors and other relevant staff.

Local and European Election Workshops

Each workshop will cover all aspects of organising the elections and concentrate, in particular, on the following areas:

  • Nominations, postal and special votes.
  • Detailed procedures for the counting of votes including the use of the new, updated e-count programme during the count.
  • Details and demonstration of how to conduct a re-count.

Re-Count Workshops

Each Re-count Workshop will demonstrate how to conduct a successful re-count.  A mock re-count will be conducted in order to demonstrate the procedures and principles involved.

Materials used during each of the above workshops will include results of previous elections which demonstrate the principles applied both during a count and re-count.

All workshops are facilitated by John Condon, Padraig Hughes and Stephen Carolan, each of whom have many years’ experience of election counts and re-counts in Mayo and elsewhere.

Key Facts

A final Local and European Election Training workshop will be delivered on 16 April 2024 at the Tullamore Court Hotel.

In addition and due to demand, two re-count training sessions have also been scheduled for 17 April and 24 April 2024 at the Tullamore Court Hotel.  Each of the re-count workshops will involve conducting a total re-count and will deal with teh main issues that typically arise during and election re-count.

The number of places on each workshop is limited to 40. These places will be offered on a first come, first served basis. Early Booking is recommended to secure a place at your preferred workshop.

Participants are asked to register at 9:00am. Each workshop will commence promptly at 9.30am and will finish no later than 5:15pm.

Fee: The fee for attendance at a 2024 Workshops is €450 per person.  A light lunch and refreshments will be provided at each workshop.  The fee does not include accommodation. 

Booking: Bookings must be received in writing using the online booking option (see below). Please confirm your preferred workshop date and location when making your booking.

Please note that bookings cannot be confirmed without an accompanying Purchase Order (PO) number.

Cancellation Policy: Please note, that in the event of a cancellation less than 48 working hours before the commencement of a course, a 15% cancellation fee will be charged.  Cancellation fee will also apply to non-arrivals on the day.
