The Programme

The Social Housing Induction Course is a one-day course designed for newly appointed (technical and non-technical) staff in Local Authorities (Grades 3-6) and Approved Housing Bodies who provide social housing services.  From policy to practice is the training approach.  It will provide participants with an overview of key elements of housing policy, the social housing market and housing services.

Who is this for?

The Social Housing Induction Course is designed for newly appointed (technical and non-technical) staff in Local Authorities (Grades 3-6) and staff of Approved Housing Bodies who provide social housing services.

Course Content

The Social Housing Induction Course is divided into two sessions:

Session 1 sets out the broad context for the work of Local Authorities (LAs) and Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs) in the housing area.  It provides a background to social housing, an overview of the policy framework for LAs and AHBs, and an update on the Rebuilding Ireland Action Plan.  There is a policy context within which decisions are made and services provided.  LAs and AHBs are responsible for the administration of schemes and the provision of housing services.  It is important for housing staff to develop an understanding of the intended purpose behind these activities.

Session 2 focuses on the operational role of Housing Staff today.  The key features of the Housing Acts 1966 - 2014 will be explained and their relevance to staff.  An introduction to the regulatory framework that underpins the housing services of LAs and AHBs will also be provided.  Topics that will be covered include: the housing needs assessment; the allocation process; estate management; HAP and the Rebuilding Ireland Home Loan Scheme.

Assessment

Impact Assessment Quiz:

Participants will be invited to complete a voluntary multiple-choice Impact Assessment Quiz about two weeks after the training. This online quiz is designed to help embed the information provided by the course.
