Local Government

Local Government courses such as the A-Z of Irish Local Government and Legislative Training address key services and the principal pieces of legislation underpinning the services currently being provided by Local Authorities in Ireland.  We also offer a range of programmes for Housing Practitioners' that are part of the Housing Training Network.  These courses are listed below.  You may also wish to view the Housing Training Portal here.  This portal is managed by the Housing Agency in collaboration with service providers of training, education, resources and events for Housing Practitioners.

The 2018 Housing Practitioners' Conference, organised in association with the Housing Agency was held on 17-18 May 2018 at the Royal Marine Hotel, Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.

The New Thinking for Housing workshops are themed workshops held over 2 x 2 days and targeted at current and future housing managers in Local Authorities and Approved Housing Bodies. This new leadership programme has been jointly organised by the Institute of Public Administration and the Housing Agency.

The Social Housing Induction Course is a one-day course designed for newly appointed (technical and non-technical) staff in Local Authorities (Grades 3-6) and staff of Approved Housing Bodies who provide social housing services.  From policy to practice is the training approach.  It will provide participants with an overview of key elements of housing policy, the social housing market and housing services.

The LGDA Conference 2018, scheduled for 24-25 October 2018 at the River Court Hotel, Kilkenny has been postponed due to a clash with other Local Government events and will be rescheduled for dates in 2019.

The Standards for Rented Houses Training Programme is for all local authority staff, both professional / technical and administrative, who have responsibilities related to enforcement of the Housing (Standards for Rented Houses) Regulations 2017.

This new programme seeks to bring about a common understanding among Inspectorate Staff, and thereby standardisation, in interpretation and implementation of the Regulations and Guidelines both within individual local authorities and across the sector generally.

Thinking Stategically and Working Collaboratively for Effective Local Economic and Community Development is a one-day workshop.

Within the framework of Local Community Development Committees, this workshop aims to enable participants to gain:

  • A good understanding of the principles of good governance for effective partnership working;
  • An appreciation of how to develop strategic thinking skills to enable shared solutions to key challenges;
  • An awareness of how to develop oneself to become a more effective collaborative leader.

This Debt Management Programme is for staff working in Debt Management Units within the Local Government Sector.

Debt Management Units have been established in Irish Local Authorities to deal with many areas of debt management including debts associated with commercial rates, housing rents and housing loans. The focus of this programme centres around the management of debts associated with commercial rates.

Anti-social behaviour has become an all too real issue in recent years with many local authorities and their staff having to learn how to deal effectively with difficult problems arising within their housing stock; this in addition to their daily duties.

Anti-social problems can range from neighbour disputes to drug dealing - highlight the myriad of issues presenting themselves at the local authorities throughout the country.  It is imperative that they are dealt with effectively to prevent difficulties escalating.
