Management Development

This two-day Social Media Strategies course has been designed specifically for staff in the Irish Public Sector with the objective of significantly improving communication and engagement with citizens by enabling staff to plan, develop and manage effective social media strategies that meet the needs of their clients.

The course is led by an experienced social media practitioner and is designed for staff responsible for the oversight and/or development of social media programmes. Participants will learn from a mix of presentations, critical reviews, reflective learning and practical exercises and will also produce a social media framework for their organisations.

The course concentrates on the following areas:

» Preparing a Social Media Strategy and Content Plan for an Organisation.

» Developing Content for Social Media.

» Developing a Social Media Policy.

» Improving the Management and Resourcing of Social Media.

Participants are requested to bring their own wifi enabled laptop or device on the day as the course will feature practical exercises that require the use of the internet.  Free wifi is available in the IPA Training and Education Centre.

Every attendee will receive a copy of a Social Media Guide and Strategy Workbook.  Specifically produced for staff in the public sector, the workbook sets out the main elements that need to be included in a social media strategy including audience development, content for social media and advice on selecting the right social media channels for your organisation

Fee: The cost of this two-day course is €810 for Corporate Members of the Institute, €900 for others. Fee includes course material, lunch and refreshments.

Course Content

The course will cover the following:

Introduction to Social Media: Key Trends

An overview of the key social media platforms from Facebook to Twitter, Instagram to LinkedIn. The section also looks at the latest trends in social media in order to guide attendees on allocating time to different platforms.

Social Media Review and Benchmarking

Reviewing and benchmarking your social media activity against best practice is a key first step in developing a social media strategy. The section will look at the key areas to consider in a review, identifying strategic areas for improvement and includes an exercise for attendees to critique their current social media use.

Best Practice Social Media Use in the Public Sector

A valuable module in reviewing and learning from best practice social media use from a range of highly effective organisations including winners of social media bets practice awards. The module helps attendees to identify content, types of engagement and overall approaches to help improve their own work.

Preparing a Social Media Strategy and Content Plan

Attendees will learn about the core areas of a social media strategy:

  • Setting objectives
  • Establishing the key recommendations gained from the review process
  • Selecting social media platforms
  • Content development and planning
  • Social Media management, buy-In and resourcing

Practical Social Media Skills in key social media platforms

The module focusses on quickly improving knowledge and practical skills in the three most relevant social media networks: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Content Development and Planning for Social Media

Effective quality content that resonates well with audiences is key to success in social media. The module will identify different types of content, adopting an appropriate tone for social media, provide guidance on photo and video content and demonstrate tools to improve visual content. There will also be a practical exercise on creating content for an upcoming campaign.

Effective Management and Resourcing of Social Media

Securing the appropriate level of resources and adopting a workable structure are key to social media success. The module will map out the key areas to address including gaining management buy-in and acting as a co-ordinator for social media content

Social Media Policy and Risk Mitigation

Social media presents particular risks and challenges to organisations. The module reviews the main risks from social media and trains attendees in procedures and policies to mitigate the risks and develop or improve a social media policy. Attendees will also work on preparing a social media policy for their organisation.

Reporting Success: Measurement and Evaluation

The final module sets out the value of reporting social media success to senior management together with the key metrics and KPIs to focus on.

Course Leader

The workshop is delivered by Paul McGarrity, a qualified and highly experienced social media and digital marketing practitioner and trainer. Paul is an Associate Training Specialist with the IPA.  He has successfully delivered social media training courses for a range of Irish Public Sector organisations including state agencies and local government.
