Managing conflict with Confidence: Focusing on Resolution is designed to give participants an understanding of conflict and different approaches to resolving conflict.  It aims to raise participant’s awareness of their own style of conflict management using the Thomas Kilmann Conflict Management Instrument.  Participants will also be introduced to the skills of conflict resolution.

The IPA’s approach on this programme is to use a blend of short presentations, facilitated discussions, practical exercises, and individual and group reflection in an interactive way to facilitate the participants’ learning.

Delivery Method

This workshop will be delivered over a half day from 9:30am - 1:00pm. It is delivered in person and facilitated by a subject matter expert.  In person training will take place at the Institute of Public Administration, Ballsbridge, Dublin D04 TC62.

Participants will be invited to complete the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument in advance of the course and numbers  attending will be limited.  Early booking is recommeded to secure a place. 

Please note that as this is an interactive programme of training with an emphasis on engagement and skill building, we limit the size of the group.  If you wish to book places for a number of staff from a single organisation, we recommend that you contact training@ipa.ie in the first instance, as a tailored programme may be more suitable.

Fee: The cost of this half-day course is €345 per person. 

Individuals who are paying for themselves must pay in full by credit card at the time of booking.

All IPA courses are subject to minimum participant numbers and bookings will typically close one  to two weeks prior to the course start date.

Cancellation Policy: Please note, that in the event of a cancellation less than 48 working hours before the commencement of a course, a 15% cancellation fee will be charged.  Cancellation fee will also apply to non-arrivals on the day.

Who is this for?

Managing conflict with Confidence: Focusing on Resolution is suitable for staff at all levels who wish to enhance their knowledge, skills and approach to conflict resolution, in relation to organisational and workplace conflict.

Learning Outcomes

Those who complete this workshop will have:

  • A greater understanding of conflict and how it can arise.
  • An understanding of different approaches to dealing with conflict.
  • Skills to increase effectiveness when managing conflict or holding difficult conversations within the workplace.
Course Content

The worshop will cover the following:

  • How do we get into conflict? Analysis of conflict, why it happens
  • Understanding different approaches to conflict
  • Tackling the Tough Conversation
  • The Balcony view- effective listening, questioning, negotiation and communication skills
  • Reducing the need for conflict
  • Opportunity to practice the skills required in dealing with challenging workplace issues
