In a new book from the Institute of Public Administration entitled Housing in Ireland: Beyond the Markets, Lorcan Sirr, in his introduction, tells us ‘Good housing policy is good social policy. Indeed, what is little appreciated is that good housing policy is good transport policy, good health policy, good fiscal policy, good planning policy, good gender policy, and so on’.

Within this broader context the author highlights several key insights relevant to housing policy including:

  • how women are disproportionately negatively affected by poor housing development and policy;
  • how there is no point having A-rated housing if we still need a diesel car (or two) to get around;
  • how decent housing is essential for decent mental and physical health;
  • and how home-ownership remains the cornerstone of our housing system, despite the influx of rental apartments.
