Cancellation Policy: Please note, that in the event of a cancellation less than 48 working hours before the commencement of a course, a 15% cancellation fee will be charged.  Cancellation fee will also apply to non-arrivals on the day.

The Freedom of Information (FOI) for Decision Makers in Local Authorities webinar is for those who wish to raise their awareness and/or deepen their understanding of FOI as it relates to the Local Government Sector. This webinar is for those working in Irish Local Authorities.

Who is this for?

This webinar is specifically for Local Authority personnel only in view of the transferability of the learning from the cases discussed to the Authorities.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of the webinar participants will have a knowledge and understanding of the sections of the Act that are most relevant to the Local Authority sector.

Course Content

During the webinar there will be a focus on:

  • The role and function of FOI and how it contributes to openness and transparency;
  • The role and function of each of the FOI team e.g. Decision Maker, FOI Officer, Internal Reviewer, Office of the Information Commissioner
  • How we respond to an FOI
  • The role and function of the exemptions and why we withhold information
  • The Public Interest Test, The Harm/injury Test, The Class Test and how we  interpret these
  • The key exemptions that Local Authority use to withhold information
  • Seminal Local Authority decisions and the key learning from them
  • The appeals mechanism for requesters dissatisfied with their response
Course Leader

This webinar will be delivered by Maebh O'Connor. Maebh has been involved in the design and delivery of FOI related workshops since the Act’s inception in 1997.
